Are You Kidding Me?

Read: The National Post about this yahoo in Van....

And then: the follow-up article in the Post which just proves that democracy works, at least over a weekend. My favourite part: "Potvin says he was speaking symbolically in the 2002 article but stands by what he said."

I assume that he's standing by what he said symbolically, as opposed to actually. Yes, well. Right. Where do these people come from? I was going to make a few cracks about people from Couverville, but decided against it since most people from Couverville don't get the joke and they don't need to be associated with this guy. Why he isn't just laughed at and taunted until he runs away and cries I don't understand.

But I also like this: "He says since the controversy come to light, he’s received several death threats" from people with no sense of irony. Or perspective. Just let this guy hold a few more press conferences and he'll do himself in.

Lorne Gunther does a good job comparing this to Reform's emergence in 1993 and how that party had to weed out all the looney tunes before they were taken seriously nationally. The leader of the Green party must have thought long and hard for about five minutes before she decided to turf this guy. "Let's see, we are trying to convince people who live in a country that has snow in mid-April that a temperature increase of one or two degrees would be a bad thing to vote for a fringe party that makes the NDP look like big time players, and this guy gets us coverage by crushing his tin foil hat so tight he thinks Bush was in on 9/11 and that it was a good thing and he handles the media coverage like a elementary school assembly organizer." (I picture Elizabeth May chomping on a cigar with a glass of scotch in hand when she's in private, wearing fur coats and resting her Italian leather loafers on an Ottoman covered in clubbed baby seal fur).

No surprise that Potvin was thrown out by the Greens, but I have a feeling that we haven't heard the last of him yet. Possible book deal? CBC interview? Mention on ET Canada? Just as long as he's given enough rope. And we can all bring out taunting sticks.
